Proudly rise the Balkan peaks,
At their feet Blue Danube flows;
Over Thrace the sun is shining,
Pirin looms in purple glow.

Oh, dear native land,
Earthly paradise!
For your loveliness, your beauty
E'er will charm our eyes.

Our beautiful homeland,

Oh dear, heroic land,

Fatherland of ancient glory,

May you always be happy!

Dear, as much as you are glorious,

Only you are dear to us.

Dear, where your land is flat,

Dear, where it is mountainous.

Flow Sava, Drava flow,

Nor you, Danube, lose your power!

Azure sea, tell to the world

That a Croat loves his nation!

As long as the sun warms his ploughed land,

As long as storms lash his oak trees,

As long as graves hide his dead,

As long as his living heart beats!

Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła

Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła,
Kiedy my żyjemy.
Co nam obca przemoc wzięła,

Z ziemi włoskiej do Polski,
Za twoim przewodem
Złączym się z narodem.
Przejdziem Wisłę, przejdziem Wartę,
Będziem Polakami,
Dał nam przykład Bonaparte,
Jak zwyciężać mamy.
Marsz, marsz, Dąbrowski...
Jak Czarniecki do Poznania
Po szwedzkim zaborze,
Dla ojczyzny ratowania
Wrócim się przez morze.

Marsz, marsz, Dąbrowski...

Już tam ojciec do swej Basi
Mówi zapłakany:
"Słuchaj jeno, pono nasi

Poland has not yet perished

Poland has not yet perished,
as long as we live.
Whatever foreign force took from us,
we'll retake by sabre.

March, March, Dabrowski,
from Italian land to Poland.
Under your lead,
we'll unite with the nation.

We'll cross Vistula,
We'll cross Warta,
We'll be Polish people.
Bonaparte showed us an example
how we should win.

March, March, Dabrowski...

Like Czarnecki to Poznan,
after Swedish occupation,
To save fatherland,
we'll return across the sea.

March, March, Dabrowski...

And over there, a father tells his Basia, crying:
"Listen, it sounds like ours
are drumming military drums."

March, March, Dabrowski...

 O Slavs

O, Slavs, there still lives
Word of our grandfathers
While for the people heart strikes
Of their sons

You will live for centuries
Futile is the Hell's abyss
Futile is the fire of thunder

Even if now there above us
Storm shatters everything
Stone breaks, tree shatters
Earth quakes

We stand steadily
As river gorges
Damned be the traitor
Of his homeland

"My bielarusy" (We the Belarusians)

Words by: Maxim Klimkovich and Uladzimir Karyzny

In use: 1955-1991, 2002- (with words)

Music by: Nester Sakalouski

1991-2002- (without words)

Upon the dissultion of the Soviet Union in 1991, Belarus kept the anthem it used as a soviet socialist republic, without the words. (Many SSR's have used an wordless, or instrumental, version of the SSR hymn very soon after the break up.) On July 2, 2002, President Lukashenko set a decree that the Belarus hymn will have lyrics, and ones were adopted in a contest. Many of the lyrics were similar to the Belarussian SSR anthem lyrics.

Bulgaria
"Mila Rodino" (Dear Homeland)

Words by: Tsvetan Tsvetkov Radoslavov

In use: 1964-

Music by: Tsvetan Tsvetkov Radoslavov

The melody of the Bulgarian anthem. It was written and composed by a Bulgarian student in 1885, as he went off to fight in the Serbo-Bulgarian war.

Before the fall of the communist government in 1991-92, a third verse was added to "Mila Rodino", referencing Moscow's allegiance to Bulgaria, but this was removed after the communists were removed from government. (The third verse was not part of the original lyrics.)

"Lijepa nasa Domovino" (Our Beautiful Homeland)

Words by: Antun Mihanovic

In use: 1990-

Music by: Josip Runjanin

The lyrics to the anthem were first printed in Danica (The Morning Star) magazine in 1835, under the title "Hrvatska domovina" ("Croatian Homeland"). The music was composed later (1840s) by Josip Runjanin, a Croatian Serb, on the basis of Donizetti's "O sole piu ratto" from the opera "Lucia di Lammermoor". Later, in 1861, the score went through some minor changes done by V. Lichtenegger. In 1891 the song was first sung as the national anthem at an exhibition held by the Croatian-Slavonian Economic Society in Zagreb. It was readopted a year before Croatia achieved independence from Yugoslavia in December 1990. Only the first and last eight lines are used officially.

This national anthem was created in 1943 by Vlado Maleski, a poet from Struga. It was adopted as the anthem of the Republic of Macedonia upon its establishment after World War II. The song was later selected to be the anthem of the newly independent Republic of Macedonia in 1991

Poland
"Jeszcze Polska nie zginela" (Poland has not yet perished)

Words by: Jozef Wybicki

In use: 1927-

Music by: unknown

The National Anthem of the Republic of Poland, also called "Dabrowki's Mazurek" or "Song of the Polish Legions in Italy", was written in July 1797 in Reggio near Bolonia by Jozef Wybicki, one of the organisers of general Jan Henryk Dabrowski's Polish Army in Italy. This song of Dabrowski's soldiers soon became the favourite hymn of all Poles.

The title "Jeszcze Polska nie zginela" refers to the partitions of Poland between Russia, Prussia and Austria in 1795. The chorus "March, Dabrowski, from Italy to Poland" refers to the Polish legions, who were all wiped out in the Caribbean while members of Napoleon's troops.

Its familiar mazurka melody and its message - a call to join the fight for independence - inspired numerous 19th century patriotic songs and national hymns of the Slavonic nations under foreign rule (some of which would later become Yugoslavia, which could explain the similar melody of the former Yugoslav anthem.) In the early years after Poland's revival in 1918, during the debate about the choice of the national anthem, several candidates were considered. On February 28th 1927 the choice of "Dabrowski's Mazurek" as the national anthem was officially announced.

Russia
"Gimn Rossiyskaya Federatsiya" (Hymn of the Russian Federation)

Words by: Sergei Vladimirovich Mikhalkov

In use: 2001-

Music by: Alexandr Vasilievich Alexandrov

On January 1, 2001, Russia's new president Vladimir Putin, decided to give the Russian people a new anthem, since a common complaint was not having words to their current anthem. So Putin adopted the old anthem from the Soviet Union , identifying with the country's past. New words, however, to replace the Communist-style words, were written by Sergei Vladimirovich Mikhalkov (the same person who wrote the lyrics to the old Soviet anthem!) to go with the existing music.

Serbia and Montenegro
"Hej Slaveni" (O Slavs)

Words by: Samuel Tomasik

In use: 2003-

Music by: unknown

In February, 2003, what was left of Yugoslavia changed its name to Serbia and Montenegro. Since that time, there have been proposals to change the national anthem, but, as of yet, no bill has passed the parliament, so the old Yugoslav anthem continues to be of use. In the areas of Serbia and Montenegro themselves, the respective local anthems continue to be in use prominently.

After the communist revolution in 1945, Yugoslavia adopted the Slavic folk song "Hej Slaveni" as their new national anthem. The anthem was composed in the mid nineteenth century as an anthem for the Slavonic movement. The anthem melody is nearly the same as Poland.

Slovakia
"Nad Tatrou sa blyská" (Storm Over the Tatras)

Words by: Janko Matuska

In use: 1993-

Music by: traditional

Until the breakup of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the Slovak anthem was used as part of the Czechoslovakian anthem, played immediately following the Czech anthem. The melody of the anthem, long used as an unofficial anthem, is that of a Slovak folk song commemorating the exodus of Slovak students from Bratislava in 1843. The Tatras mentioned in the title and text are a mountain range in the eastern part of the country

Slovenia
"Zdravljica" (A Toast)

Words by: France Preseren

In use: 1990-

Music by: Stanko Premrl

Upon the independence of Slovenia from Yugoslavia, a new anthem was adopted. Instead of “naprej zastava slave”! which was used on an unofficial basis before, a new anthem was created, the words taken from the seventh stanza of the France Preseren poem Zdravljica and set to the tune of composer Stanko Premrl's choral composition of the same name. ("Naprej zastava slave" remains the official anthem of the Slovenian military.)
